Program Description

The Adolescent Achievement Program (AAP)
A.A.P. is the most recent program implemented by G.C.S.S. The AAP is designed to reduce the recidivism rate of adolescents with identified substance abuse issues, by providing intensive supervision and coordination of services.

Anger Managment Program (Male and Female)
The program aims to help youth focus on and find solutions to unmanageable anger and rage. This is a weekly program and runs in 10-week cycles. Male and Female groups are held separately.

BeMe!SM
Preparation for young men to meet life challenges; academic enrichment; social skills development and emotional development.

Boys’ Anger Management Group (BAM)
Specialized intervention for anger management problems in an all male group setting.

CHRIS Homes
CHRIS Homes provides flexible, community based mental health treatment services to severely emotionally disturbed, abused and/or neglected children and their families in the residential and non-residential programs. Grounded in respect and designed to build on individual and family strengthens to achieve positive outcomes.

Community Service Program
The Community Service Program offers youths an opportunity to be held accountable, focusing on the victim and/or community, rather than themselves. In some cases, monetary restitution exceeds the amount the child is able to pay or age hinders the ability to obtain viable part time employment. In such instances, community service is an option utilized by Judges for the youth’s accountability. Youths are placed at approximately 51 sites in the community, depending on their age, skill level, and the offense for which they were referred to the Court.

Destined 4 Greatness Poetry
Therapeutic poetry writing to encourage self exploration; healing; interpersonal conflict resolution.

Electronic Monitoring Program
Youths placed under house arrest by Judges as a condition of release or pending the disposition of a charge are wired with monitoring equipment, which severely restricts or limits youth participation in activities outside of the home. Through an ankle bracelet and monitoring equipment attached to the home phone, court officers are aware when the youth is out of the pre-approved range.

Family Ties
Family Ties is an agency dedicated to helping families and troubled youth develop the skills and resources necessary for the youth to be maintained safely in their own home. They strive to teach youth the skills that will enhance their individual growth; help them to develop a focus in their lives, and be productive. Family Ties are most successful reaching this goal when families identify the behaviors and values that jeopardize the youth's home stay.

Family Values
Family Values provides services designed to help families in crisis where children are at risk, and in need of a safe, stable and nurturing home through strengthening and empowering the family as a unit. Family Values provides in home intervention counseling, and other practical and creative methods to meet the needs of the family in a manner that is determined by, and respectful, of the families themselves.

Girls’ Anger Management Group (GAM)
Specialized intervention for anger management problems in an all female group setting.

Georgia Community Support & Solutions (GCSS)
G.C.S.S. provides a variety of community based services that include respite services, service coordination, personal support, and a community integration program for people with disabilities.

Georgia Parent Support Network (GPSN)
GPSN offers the Family Support program that provides support and resource utilization for families. This program is intended to coordinate and facilitate the wrap-around process for the client and their family while providing support and feedback to them. Another service offered by GPSN is the Safety Network, which is designed to allow an adolescent sex offender to live at home and receive similar supervision as if he/she were incarcerated or residing in a treatment facility.

Intensive Behavior Modification (IBM)
Comprehensive approach integrating life skills, manhood training, decision making skills, and conflict resolution.

Mediation Program
This program offers the victim and offender an opportunity to meet each other, talk in a non-threatening environment about the dispute, express concerns and negotiate an agreeable settlement, with a trained court mediator present. The Court decides which cases referred will be handled through mediation, and the mediator contacts parties to set a date and time for the mediation conference. This process allows youths to be directly accountable for their actions, addresses victim’s needs and model conflict resolution techniques that can be retained by all parties.

Meeting of the Minds
The focus of the twelve (12) week program is to assist probated youths and youths being supervised informally to combat poor self-esteem, parental conflicts, illiteracy, teen pregnancy, violence. Youths get instruction on making good career choices, interviewing techniques and effective communication. Sessions also concentrate on becoming and staying organized and focused on goals. The one hour and fifteen minute sessions are held twice weekly at DeKalb Juvenile Court.

On-Point (male)
Focusing on problem solving, negative peer influence, males facing problems with oppositional behavior.

Parents as Learners (P.A.L.) Teen Parenting Group
This program is designed to offer support to teen parents, male and female. Parenting skills and other needed resource information and guidance is provided for youths. The support group allows for teens to share their feelings, fears, inadequacies, etc., with other teens. The group is lead by a trained facilitator and is offered at the Scottsdale Child Development and Resource Center in Scottsdale, Ga.

PASSAGE
Focuses on education, social services, resources and healthy relationship for pregnant and parenting teens.

Priceless (female)
Focusing on problem solving, negative peer influence, females facing problems with oppositional behavior.
  
  
PEER DISCUSSION GROUPS

Male and Female
The groups consist of youths involved with the Court either on formal probation or those being informally supervised, meeting weekly at Juvenile Court. Topics or subject matters addressed include behavior modification, dealing with stress, peer pressure, goal/career setting, educational opportunities or laws as they pertain to juveniles and adults. The groups were mainly designed to give a food for thought, allowing open, frank discussions led by Probation Officers or invited guests for specific topics.
 
 
PROJECT DESTINY (LIFE SKILLS)

Project Destiny is an eighteen (18) week program in the community specializing in providing instruction, guidance and support to at risk youths and their parents. The program targets youths, ages 13 -17, who have evidenced poor socialization skills, demonstrated school problems and disruptive or unruly behavior in the home. Both the parent and child are required to attend weekly support group sessions, as well as individual and/or family counseling with a licensed counselor, arranged by program staff. The program also focuses on school drop out prevention, which includes tutoring, providing an alternative for youths suspended from school and mentoring. The program has a job training and placement component for eligible participants.
 
 
STAMP OUT SHOPLIFTING WORKSHOP (S.O.S)

S.O.S. is an educational workshop for both the youth referred to the court and his/her parents, and is held on two consecutive nights each month. Both the child and at least one parent are required to attend. Workshop facilitators are loss prevention specialists from local retail stores or law enforcement personnel. Sessions include films, group discussions, a values clarification exercise, family interaction session and addresses such issues as store losses, why j juveniles steal, decision making skills, peer pressures as it relates to shoplifting, etc.
 
 
STEM PROGRAM

The Selective Training Educational Ministries (STEM) is a program designed to provide opportunities for youths to learn about job preparation, interviewing techniques, and job development. Youths completing the program are assisted in job placement.
 
 
STRENGTHENING FAMILIES PROGRAM

This is an ten (10) week program, for offenders age 10 - 15, designed to help parents and youth build family strengths, provide parents with a mutually supportive environment to discuss concerns, and to provide youth with an opportunity to interact positively with one another and adults. Program participants meet once a week for two hours. During the first hour, parents and children meet separately in groups lead by trained facilitators and are brought together during the second hour to process. Follow up and referrals to other resources are available for each family at the conclusion of the program.
 
 
SUPER STOP

SUPER STOP is a seven (7) session (2 hours each session) family prevention education program that aims at building stronger families by increasing the level of self-esteem and pride within the family. It also helps to improve family communication skills and parenting skills.
 
 
S.U.P.E.R. (Substance Use Prevention & Education Resource)

The SUPER Program is a four session program, sponsored by the Metropolitan Atlanta Council on Alcohol and Drugs , designed to provide information about the effects and results of tobacco, alcohol and other illegal and legal drug abuse, to enhance family communication, to discuss the physical and psychological effects of use and addiction, and to discuss the legal consequences of the use and sale of drugs. Both parent and child are required to attend all four sessions. The sessions, two hours each, are held at the DeKalb County Public Library on Covington Highway.
 
 
TEEN COURT PROGRAM

Teen Court is a diversion program for first-time misdemeanor offenders, ages 13-16. The program involves youths who have been through an extensive training program to assume roles of Judge, Prosecutor, Defense Attorney and Bailiff in a mock trial process, hearing cases and giving consequences to offenders referred. The program aims at getting youths to take responsibility for their actions through positive peer pressure. Student volunteers are recruited from DeKalb County High Schools.

Thinking for a Change (T4C)
Problem solving, social skills and cognitive restructuring.

Tutorial Program
Provides homework assistance as well as enrichment in the areas of mathematics and reading.
 
 
VIOLENCE PREVENTION EDUCATION PROJECT (VPEP)

The goal of this six (6) session program is to offer alternative behaviors to young males who have chosen to use violent abusive and controlling behaviors. VPEP utilizes a rational emotive educational format that provides an opportunity for each young male to become aware, acknowledge and take action in choosing non-violent, non- abusive, and non- controlling behaviors in their interaction with women and girls.
 
 
THE WINNING CIRCLE PROGRAM

This twelve (12) week program is designed for males; to teach boys to become men. The goal of the curriculum is to promote healthy relationships and instill self-discipline. Youths learn through a series of exercises, lectures, films, family values, the importance of relationships, responsibility, to become positive and resilient.
 
 
YOUTH DIVERSION PROGRAM

YDP is a community based adult volunteer program located in seven (7) sites throughout DeKalb County. Volunteers are recruited and trained to serve on community based panels that actually interview first-time misdemeanor offenders and their parents and decide the consequences for the offense. Volunteers are provided with training, classroom and observations, in working with children, their families and on appropriate consequences for the offenses. Youths successfully completing YDP have their cases considered for dismissals by the court.
