Inspiring a Greener Future Today
Welcome to DeKalb's Green Focus website.  Here you'll learn how the county is earning a reputation for being the Greenest Urban County in America.  We’ve created a one-stop shop for residents to find out about programs that promote conservation, reduce environmental impact, grow the green economy and improve our quality of life in DeKalb County.

County Energy and Environmental Management Plan
In 2011, the county completed a comprehensive study that identified current initiatives and recommended actions for becoming more energy effiient, conservation-oriented and environmentally sustainable.  This plan is the foundation for future sustainability actions.  Click here to read the report.

Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) Certified
As part of the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Green Communities Program, DeKalb County has earned Bronze Certification. The Green Communities Program recognizes communities in the metro Atlanta region that implement policies and practices to support sustainability and reduce overall environmental impact.  Among the County’s innovative green initiatives are:

The Lights Out, Power Down energy conservation policy
The Green Energy facility at the Seminole Road landfill
 Certified LEED buildings
The Green Fleet policy for county vehicles
 Low-flow plumbing fixture replacement ordinance
The new, efficient ozone system at the county jail laundry facilities

To learn more about DeKalb's Green Community certification, visit the ARC website.

Green Commission
In 2009, County Commissioner Kathie Gannon, Super District 6, created the DeKalb County Green Commission with the support of CEO Burrell Ellis.  Click here to find out how the Green Commission is improving the quality of life of DeKalb residents.
