DeKalb has traditionally been one of the fastest growing refugee and non-English speaking communities in the State of Georgia. In order to support the diverse population in DeKalb County, the Department of Family and Children Services has a Family Support Team that specializes in serving the refugee and non-English speaking population. The team consists of bilingual staff that are trained in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Refugee Medical Assistance (RMA), Medical Assistance Only (MAO), Low income Medicaid (LIM), Food Stamps and Employment Services. The DeKalb County Department of Family and Children Services makes translation service available for face-to-face interviews and for telephone needs through a translation based service.

The unit consists of bilingual staff that conducts eligibility determinations for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Refugee Cash Assistance (RCA), Refugee Medical Assistance (RMA), Medical Assistance only (MAO), Low Income Medicaid (LIM), Food Stamps (FS), and Social or Employment related services. The unit will assist refugees up until their first year in the United States. After the first year, cases that reside in DeKalb County will be transferred and handled in DeKalb County Department of Family and Children Services.
