The DeKalb County Department of Family and Children Services was established as the DeKalb County Department of Public Welfare in 1937. Its purpose was and is to administer funds legislated through the Social Security Act of 1935 to provide relief to needy families, children, and aged, blind and disabled adults.
During its existence, the DeKalb County Department of Family and Children Services has experienced many changes in responsibilities because of many emerging economic and social challenges experienced in the County and State. On the whole, the trend has been a steady increase in the demands made upon fiscal and physical resources and facilities, consistent with DeKalb County's growth and cultural diversity. The DeKalb County Department of Family and Children Services is proud to be part of a county whose history and tradition reflect that its communities conscientiously strive to responds to the their citizens' needs.
